Outdoor Glass Balustrades Sevenoaks

Outdoor glass balustrade at patio and garden room edge, Sevenoaks Glass Balustrades installation

Sevenoaks Glass Balustrades installs outdoor glass balustrades for gardens, raised terraces, pool surrounds, and external staircases across Sevenoaks and the surrounding villages.

Sevenoaks sits on the edge of the North Downs. Many properties in Kippington, The Vine, and the TN14 villages occupy elevated or sloped plots. Rear gardens step down to lower levels. Terraces are raised. Decking is common. Where drops exceed 600mm, Building Regulations require guarding. Glass is the most unobtrusive option. It keeps sightlines open across a garden in Sevenoaks Weald or a terrace in Ide Hill without blocking light into the house.

Outdoor Glass Balustrade Applications

Garden Terraces and Raised Patios

A raised terrace or patio that drops more than 600mm to the ground below requires guarding under Building Regulations Part K. Glass is the most unobtrusive option. It provides the required protection without blocking light into the house or interrupting the view from the terrace.

We install frameless channel-fixed systems and post-spigot systems depending on the substrate and the customer’s preference. For ground-level terraces used as social space, glass creates a defined boundary without the enclosed feel of a solid wall.

Raised Decking

Raised timber and composite decks are one of the most common outdoor balustrade projects we carry out across Sevenoaks. When a deck sits more than 600mm above ground, guarding is a requirement. Glass balustrades sit cleanly on composite decking and leave the surface finish undisturbed.

Properties in Seal and Sevenoaks Weald with sloped rear gardens frequently have multi-level decking with height changes that need guarding. Glass handles these transitions cleanly.

Pool and Hot Tub Surrounds

Glass balustrades around pools and hot tubs combine safety guarding with minimal visual disruption. A frameless glass surround allows supervision from any angle. For households with children, this is important.

Pool surrounds present a specific challenge for hardware: pool chemicals are corrosive in combination with weather exposure. We specify hardware appropriately for the combined environment. See our dedicated glass pool fence page for full detail.

External Staircases

External stairs from a raised terrace or deck down to the garden need guarding on at least one side. Glass guarding on external staircases follows the same structural principles as internal staircases: fully weatherproof hardware and fully toughened glass.

Rain provides a self-cleaning effect outdoors. For the full range of staircase glass balustrades including internal applications, see our dedicated page.

Outdoor Glass Balustrade Maintenance

Outdoor glass balustrades are genuinely low-maintenance if specified correctly. The three key elements are the glass panels, the stainless hardware, and the sealants and fixings.

Glass Panels

Toughened glass does not corrode, rust, rot, or deteriorate. Rain cleans the surface naturally. Sevenoaks’ water is hard due to the chalk water table from the North Downs. Mineral deposits can be removed with a dilute solution of white vinegar or a specialist glass cleaner.

Stainless Hardware

Grade 304 stainless steel is appropriate for most Sevenoaks gardens, which have no coastal salt-air exposure. It develops a passive oxide layer that is self-protecting.

An occasional wipe-down with a damp cloth removes surface deposits and keeps the passive layer functioning. We do not recommend abrasive cleaners.

Sealants and Fixings

Fixings into masonry or concrete use stainless A4 bolts as standard. Sealants around base channels are UV-stable neutral-cure silicone.

We inspect all sealant lines at the end of installation and advise on replacement schedule, typically every 10 to 15 years.

The practical upkeep of an outdoor glass balustrade is a fraction of what painted timber requires. No annual painting, no rot checks, no spindle replacement.

Safety Standards and Costs

Building Regulations and Standards

All outdoor balustrade installations comply with Building Regulations Part K (guarding where there is a drop of 600mm or more, minimum height 1,100mm for terraces and decks), BS 6180 (structural performance of barriers), and BS EN 12150 (toughened safety glass specification).

For decks specifically, guarding must resist a horizontal point load of 0.74kN at any single point. Our post-spigot and channel-fixed systems are engineered to these loads. See our frameless glass balustrades page for full specification detail.

Framed and Frameless Costs

Framed outdoor glass balustrade (per linear metre): £150 to £250. Posts at intervals with glass infill panels.

Frameless outdoor glass balustrade (per linear metre): £250 to £400. A typical raised decking project of 8 linear metres costs approximately £1,800 to £3,200. A typical garden terrace of 10 linear metres costs approximately £3,500 to £5,500. Call 01732 444478 for a site-specific quote.
